Gender Sterotypes

The comparison between the egg and the sperm scientifically differs from gender stereotypes because the "norm" is that the male is supposed to be the big and strong and powerful specimen while as the women are fragile and sacred and unable to fend for themselves. However, the egg is the larger, sturdier specimen while the sperm is much more gentle and soft in comparison. The sperm even tries to escape from the egg which creates a more passive characteristic for the sperm.
The contrast between Katniss from the Hunger Games and Bella from Twilight is more along the lines of feminism and how some people think it should be. Some would say that Bella is the ideal feminist because of her submissive acts; depending on Edward or Jacob to come to her rescue, being the "clumsy", fragile little girl she is. On the other hand, some people, including the author of the article, would say that Katniss would be the stereotypical feminist because of her "tomboyish" attitude and "badass" persona. This could be related to the equality portion of feminism because, a certain percentage of feminists believe that to be a real woman, is to be able to take care of herself without needing the strength, the companionship, or the ideals of a man.

  1. I completely agree with you on the fact that scientifically the comparison between the egg an the sperm differs from gender stereotypes. Like you said gender stereotypes imply that men are bigger and stronger than females, while scientifically females are the strong ones with the males being what I would call, the weaker link. Now I do not think that the character Katniss from the Hunger Games is along the lines of how people think feminism should be only because she is more of an independent individual and very rarely depends on other through out the Games. Bella on the other hand does signifies feminism significantly. My idea of a woman would be more of the person that Katniss is, I was raised around a lot of very independent women so I feel its a must that a woman must be able to do on her own.

  2. I agree with your introduction on the sperm and the egg. It is true that the textbooks do negatively characterize the females part in reproduction and credits mostly the sperm, but the eggs are really the tougher out of the egg and the sperm. It is important to give credit to the women's reproductive system and all of its wonders, but I have to disagree with your ideals on feminism. The idea behind feminism lies in equality of genders, not in being independent from men. Now, independence from men can be a form of feminism, but feminism itself strives for equal treatment. I feel labeling Bella as a feminist is inappropriate because Bella does not represent feminism. Katniss would be a better example of a feminist if we were to use your definition of feminism, that is, independence from men. Katniss is very independent and even kills many men throughout the books/movies. As far as eggs and sperm go, im onboard, but I have differing views on feminism.
