The two essays “The Upside of Income Inequality” and “Why
the Rich are Getting Richer” both talk about income inequality in our world
today. However I believe that “The Upside of Income Inequality” is a much
better essay as far as being useful goes. It was a much better structured essay
with facts and charts that allowed me to get a better understanding of what
they were particularly talking about in the essay. This essay was also a lot shorter
which allowed me to read it over and over. The main idea that they are trying
to get across is how the rise in inequality accompanied a rise in the payoff to
education and other skills. A good example showing how people with education
and other skills have a higher payoff then others is when it says “…a person with
a college education earned roughly 70 percent more.” Clearly it is showing how
much more money people that have college educations are able to make compared
to those who don’t. This essay has a much higher value of usefulness if you
were to compare it to “Why the rich are getting richer”. Although they do tend to both talk about
Economic Inequality I feel that “Why The Rich are getting Richer” is not as
useful as “The Upside of Income Inequality” because it is very long and wordy
and focuses more comparing the economy to other times in America. It is useful
and does have facts and data but for me personally I found “The Upside of
Income Inequality” to be a lot more useful and easier to comprehend what they
were actually talking about.
While reading these essays I definitely agree with the fact that "The Upside of Income Inequality" was a more useful essay because it was much easier for me to interpret the main points. Although I thought the article was easy to understand and read due to it's structure, the writer's level of authority wasn't quite there for me. I felt that the writer's points may have been influenced by a slight bias compared to the author of "Why the Rich are Getting Richer, and the Poorer, Poorer." The author of "Why the Rich.." provided a much longer analysis backed with data regarding the worlds economic progression throughout the past couple of decades, which made me more convinced of the writers authority. While "The Upside of Income Equality" was a well written article that was short and sweet, I felt the author could have provided more background information to further prove his argument.
