Means of Persuasion and Barack Obama's speech were both similar in
the fact that they used ethos, logos, and pathos. In Obama's speech he really
uses pathos to capture the audience’s emotion by telling stories of different
moments in his life. He also discusses the slavery to really bring out the
emotion of his speech. Obama then used logos with historical facts and
information to strengthen his argument on racism and inequality in America. At
the time of the speech Obama was struggling to gain support and trust from the
nation. With this speech he built on his ethos by telling of some times he had
experienced inequality as a minority. With this story he created a personal
connection with the people. Means of Persuasion tells us what each tool,
ethos, logos, and pathos, should accomplish. Obama’s speech provides multiple examples
of each tool. Each tool talked about in Means of Persuasion can be used to
engage the audience for speeches, such as Obamas, or engage the reader for a
paper. The author of Means of Persuasion shows the most successful ways to persuade
someone to support your argument, I believe that Obama did a good job at this
in his speech.
