Both President Obama's speech and "Means of Persuasion" are similar. They both have the concepts of ethos, logos, and pathos. In Obamas speech he uses ethos, pathos, logos as his main pillars of the speech. While "Means of Persuasion" uses the ethos, pathos, and logos to influence people to act and feel a certain way in certain aspects like reading or writing. Obamas speech was very emotional in an aspect to where it seems he was attacking more of the ethos position more than the other two. Anger is one of the main feelings of Barak Obamas speech. He is angry about racism mainly. He just doesn't use ethos there is also some logos in their to where he is educating us on history that has happened in the past. I would have to say that reading Obama's speech had connected to me in a certain way that is hard to explain. I guess it's because I can see where he is getting his anger from.

“Means of Persuasion” helps the reader to understand ethos, pathos, and logos, as appeals and how different authors and people use these appeals to help engage their audience and keep them interested. In President Obama’s speech he does use ethos pathos and logos, but he definitely uses logos and pathos more frequently. Throughout this speech, Obama uses pathos to appeal to the reader’s emotion. He uses this because it helps the reader to make a connection to the speech and helps them to stay more intrigued and want to listen. Obama made many emotional connections in this speech such as segregation and lack of economic opportunity that really helps readers and anyone who listened to this speech that he cares deeply about these issue and he is working hard to put an end to all of these issue facing African Americans. He also uses logos to establish his credibility. Nobody would want to listen to Obama give this speech if they did not think he knew what he was talking about. Throughout this speech Obama makes it clear that he is intellectually informed about the subject in which he is speaking on and therefore establishes his credibility on the subject.
ReplyDeleteThe "Means of Persuasion" helps readers to understand the use of appeals and how to use them in their writing. the use of these appeals helps to keep the readers interested and involved in what they are reading. in Obama's
ReplyDelete"A More Perfect Union" speech, he has great uses of these appeals. he heavily uses pathos which is appealing to the readers emotions. He talks about race and how slavery is and always has been wrong and that stirs up lots of emotions in anyone reading or listening to his speech. he also uses logos which is the logical appeal. he uses this one by giving the readers insight into his background which tells us that he does indeed know what he is talking about and he has first hand knowledge of what is happening. in comparing the 2 readings, Obama used all of these appeals suggested in the "Means of Persuasion" story to get his point across to the readers that race is an issue that needs to be fixed in order to have a more productive and better society overall.
