Blog for Jan 30

In both the video we've watched and the article we've read over the past several classes, both authors seem to be advocating for a different way of thinking. The author of the article wants the reader to try and look at abstract art instinctively, not trying to find a hidden meaning as we would normally do with conventional art. The speaker in the video tries to push us towards thinking with our right brain hemisphere, to leave behind the analytical and individual parts of ourselves and become connected with everything and everyone around us. I feel as though these two authors would agree that the types of thinking they are supporting would align. Letting go of your analytical tendencies and becoming more aligned with our base instincts and becoming more connected with everything are along the same lines. Both seem like agreeable people from their work, so they would both most likely be very open to new ideas and agreeable in their discussions. Both authors would present their ideas individually, notice the similarities, and have a lengthy discussion about different ways of viewing the world. By the end of the discussion the two authors would probably be in full agreement that their ideas are in alignment, but it's also likely that neither of them would have received any new information, as they're both supporting the same sort of idea.

  1. I agree with you fully. In the article he is trying to make us look at art differently. Its not the matter of trying to figure it out its the matter on how you look at it. For both of the authors I also agree that they are intelligent people who would want to learn new things/ new ideas

  2. I can mostly agree with your post, Julia. These two authors have like minded ideas and I’m sure they would have wonderful conversations. Although Jill Bolte Taylor does strongly advocate for right minded thinking, I do not think that she is so much pushing us towards that. Instead I want to believe that she sees the balance between the two hemispheres and wants others to also realize the roles that they play in their own lives. Charney also sees that both top-down and bottom-up thinking play their part in life. Just like Shiloh gave us the assignment to write about “______ thinking is most effective for_______”, I think each way of thinking can be utilized in certain situations.
