The Thinking Game

If Noah Charney, the author of This is Your Brain on Art, and Jill Bolte Taylor went out for dinner and discussed about life's perspective, it would probably end up being a long and complex discussion about similar ideologies. Noah Charney emphasizes the importance of thinking outside the box and viewing things from a different perspective rather than the same thinking method we are accustomed to. While, Jill Bolte Taylor elaborates on the different type of person one can depending on the side of the brain that he/she utilizes. Having experienced a stroke, shutting down a part of her brain, Taylor’s recovery process was long and forced her to adapt into a different view of perspective. If both sat down, they would agree with each other that one should always take into account the different point of views possible. Having an open mind can change the way you see things and even enhance your knowledge. It is true that Charney defends his argument because he is passionate about abstract art but his ideology of viewing somethings from a different perspective can be taken to real life. While Taylor’s devastating experience made her realize how differently the two sides of the brain can make you think which made her have an open mind.

  1. I agree with you, that each author used their own experiences and priori knowledge to understand the world around them. I enjoyed how you broke down each author's experiences with abstract thinking and provided more insight to how each one thought as an individual, and paired them up with another author who might have similar ways of thinking and perspectives. Putting myself in your scenario was an interesting thought for me because of the way you presented and developed both the scene and the characters. It helped me to imagine the scenario more clearly to know a little bit more of how each author's thought process worked, what their beliefs were, and how they perceived certain aspects of life.

  2. I agree with the dinner conversation. But if I was in the dinner conversation, I would agree more with what Noah Charney would say. I wold agree with him because the way I think is more similar to his beliefs and more of the opposite of what Jill Taylor thinks. I would mostly agree with his idea of thinking outside of the box because it is easier to be different and have better ideas from thinking outside of the norms.
